The Other Checkbox

Exploring the Inequalities of the Diversity Monitoring Forms of the National Statistics.
The 'Other Checkbox' is a project that explores the inequalities within the equality and diversity monitoring forms and the national statistics. The idea of the project was born from our continuous conversation and debates on identity and not feeling represented or belonging.
It is a project that is rooted in our own lived experience as immigrants and members of the 'Other' ethnic groups ourselves.
The Other Checkbox was comprised of four interrelated outputs:
Survey
The first was a survey of 14 questions designed to capture the experience of
the general public when completing the Equality and Diversity Monitoring
forms used for National Statistics.
Podcast
We analysed the data from the 100 respondents to create the second output, a monthly podcast where we engaged in conversations about representation with people who have experienced being othered.
Exhibition
Finally, all the pieces created by participants were exhibited at the Bermondsey Project Space in SE London, raising awareness and support for members of the 'Other' ethnic groups in London.
Workshops
Our third output was a series of workshops aimed at empowering participants to explore what it means to be part of the 'Other' community and how to foster a sense of belonging.
The workshops included a variety of group activities and short exercises followed by art-making sessions where participants learned to make dolls using different materials such as fabric, paper, and clay.
